Dr. M. Suresh Kumar is an experienced and accomplished Psychiatrist in Chennai, currently associated with the Psymed Hospital (Chetput) as Director & Consultant Psychiatrist, and also practising at his private clinic in T Nagar. He was formerly a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Institute of Mental Health and Professor of Psychiatry at the Madras Medical College, Chennai. He has been involved in research and has served as an investigator for several research projects in substance use and mental health for over 25 years.

Dr. Suresh Kumar has had extensive involvement in the field of drug use prevention, treatment and mental health as a service provider, teacher, trainer, researcher and international consultant. He holds positions on a number of international boards, task forces and working groups, relating to injecting drug use, HIV/AIDS, harm reduction, etc. A former Hubert H Humphrey Fellow in substance use, he obtained a Masters degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, USA. Dr. Kumar has undertaken a range of consultancies in drug abuse treatment training, HIV prevention/care training, rapid assessment and response, the design, development and evaluation of HIV prevention/care programs and drug treatment programs, particularly opioid substitution therapy for drug using populations in several countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Mauritius, China, Myanmar, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Lao PDR and Vietnam.

In India Dr. Suresh Kumar has been involved in providing drug/alcohol dependence treatment services for thirty years and developing and organising HIV prevention, care and drug treatment programs for injecting drug users for more than twenty years. His contribution to the establishment and implementation of opioid substitution therapy in India is significant and he has authored an intervention toolkit and manual for opioid substitution therapy.

Dr. Suresh Kumar teaches research methodology to postgraduate students of medicine, dentistry and public health. He serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Drug Policy. He is a reviewer for many international journals including the American Journal of Public Health, Drug and Alcohol Dependence, International Journal of Drug Policy, Drug and Alcohol Review, Alcohol, AIDS Care, Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, Journal of Substance Use, and Harm Reduction Journal. He has published papers in many national and international peer-reviewed journals, authored chapters in books and written monographs and toolkits.

Dr. Suresh Kumar has been teaching psychiatry to postgraduates in psychiatry for over three decades and is among the well-known teachers in psychiatry in South India. A key speaker on varied topics in psychiatry on national, regional and international-level academic programmes, he is actively involved in training postgraduates and practising psychiatrists. The students trained under him are working in several countries including Australia, Canada, UK and USA.

Dr. Suresh Kumar has been engaged in assessing and organising mental health services among the population affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004 with the help of the Indian Council of Medical Research. He has been educating the public regularly through the mass media, via television programmes and articles on mental health in newspapers and magazines. An experienced clinician, he provides treatment for various psychiatric disorders and has been practising in Chennai since 1983.
